ADD

Abies procera, the noble fir, also called red fir and Christmas tree, is a western North American fir, native to the Cascade Range and Coast Range mountains of extreme northwest California and western Oregon and Washington in the United States. Noble fir is the largest of all the fir species.
Noble fir is an evergreen conifer that may grow up to 230 feet in height with a trunk of nearly 7 feet in diameter. It produces a lovely conical compact form which makes it popular for Christmas trees. The bark is grayish brown, becoming thick and deeply furrowed as it matures and reddish brown. Branches emerge from the trunk at right angles. The twigs are reddish brown. The leaves are needle-like, blue-green above and below with strong stomatal bands, and a blunt to notched tip. They are arranged spirally on the shoot, but twisted slightly s-shaped to be upcurved above the shoot. Female cones are borne singly or in groups of two, or rarely, up to five, on the upper side of 1-year-old twigs. Male cones are borne in clusters of up to 30 or more on the undersides of branchlets. The scales of the cones hold winged seeds. These disperse when the cone falls apart in fall.
