    Solanum pseudocapsicum is sometimes called Christmas Cherry or Winter Cherry, as well as Jerusalem cherry. this is a toxic plant that is closely related to tomatoes and potatoes and in the nightshade family. This perennial can be grown decoratively as a house plant, but in some areas of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand they are regarded as weeds. Solanum pseudocapsicum is Native to Peru and Ecuador, and long lived, up to 10 years. These plants are not cold tolerant, only surviving temperatures of 41 degrees Fahrenheit and a above.
    Jerusalem cherry is an erect, bushy, evergreen shrub, often grown as a winter-fruiting annual. It has wavy-margined, elliptical leaves up to 3 inches long, which are a glossy, dark green. In summer it bears white flowers similar to those of tomato or pepper. These are followed by long-lasting spherical red, yellow, or orange-red fruit, 1/2 to 3/4 inch across. Fruit is produced in the second or third year and thereafter. Fruits are mildly toxic to humans, poisonous to most animals and birds. Leaves and stems are also toxic.
