Raphanus raphanistrum, also known as White Charlock, Runch, Jointed Charlock and Wild Radish, is a plant related to mustard. It is an annual herbaceous plant. Probably native to Asia (or, according to some authorities, the Mediterranean), it has been introduced into most parts of the world, and is regarded as a damaging and invasive species in many areas, for example Australia. It is a rapid spreader and found in roadsides, ditches and disturbed sites. The plants hybrid freely with local species in the Brassica family.
Wild radish exists as a rosette until the flower stem develops at maturity. The stem base is stiffly haired and may grow up to 2 feet in height. Stems emit a radish-like smell when crushed. Leaves vary in size and shape, but are usually sparsely covered with stiff, flattened hairs, especially toward the base. Lower leaves range from football to egg shaped, deeply lobed to deeply divided into leaflets, have irregularly round edges or sharp toothed edges, and are typically 2-1/3 to 8 inches long. The inflorescence is a raceme, extending in fruiting stage. The flower corolla is regular pale yellow–lemon (occasionally white), approximately 0.6 to 0.8 inches wide. There are 4 petals, clearly veined. Wild radish flowering takes place from April through July. Seedpods are initially fleshy and with time become dry and corky. They are long and narrow, almost straight, roundish in cross-section, with a pointed tip. The pods do not open to release seed. Pods are 1 to 3 inches long.
