    Whitebark raspberry is native to North America and occurs in the western states, western Canada and Alaska. The plant is a flowering deciduous perennial shrub. It grows in fields and open woodsides, at either low or moderate elevations in almost any type of soil.
    Rubus leucodermis is a dense thicket forming shrub. The stems or canes are arching, round and covered with curved,flattened prickles. The name comes from the whitish silver bark on mature stems. Each stem can grow 3 to 9 feet in length. The crown is perennial but the canes are biennial. New ones arise where canes foot at internodes. Leaves are pinnate, oval with 3 to 5 leaflets serrated at the margins, green on top with a whitish wooly cast on the undersides. Bloom time is spring to early summer. Blooms form at the ends of stems in cymes. Flowers are perfect, white to pinkish and grow in clusters. Fruits are comprised of numerous druplets, red to reddish purple and maturing to dark purple when ripe. The fruit is the source of the flavor Blue Raspberry.
