Virginia Pine – Pinus virginiana

Scientific name: Pinus virginiana
Common names: Virginia Pine
ADD

Virginia pine may be found in Long Island in southern New York south through the Appalachian Mountains to western Tennessee and Alabama. The plant is an evergreen conifer which prefers poor soil but also thrives on well drained loam or even clay. Plants grow quickly and often develop into more of a shrub than a tree.
Pinus virginiana is a small to medium sized tree reaching up to 70 feet tall, eventually developing a flat top sparse crown. Trees commonly feature dead, gray (sharply angled upwards) branch stubs along the trunk. The bark is reddish and scaly with bar patches that show the cinnamon underwood. Leaves are evergreen needles, 1 1/2 to 3 inches long, with 2 yellow-green, twisted, somewhat divergent needles per fascicle. Flowers are small yellow cylinders at the end of a branch. Pine cones are small and oval-shaped, up to two-and-a-half inches long. Both male and female cones are present. Males are yellow and near the branch tip while females are yellow to red with a curved prickle. Seeds ahve a wing. Birds and animals eat the pine nuts and help disperse them.
