Sierra White Fir – Abies lowiana
Abies lowiana is native to North America and occurs primarily in the western mountain ranges. It is taxonomically grouped with Abies concolor. The tree prefers moderately humid climate with long winters and moderate to heavy deposits of snow. Much of the population is found at elevations of 4,000 to 10,000 feet along western Sierra Nevada. It is a very important commercial tree both as an ornamental and as a Christmas tree option. It also has importance in the timber industry as a lumber wood.
Sierra white fir is a medium to large tree that can achieve between 80 and 197 feet in height. The trunk diameter may reach 6 or more feet in width. The bark is 4 to 7 inches thick on old trunks, ashy gray and divided by deep irregular furrows in thick, horny flattened ridges. The young stems have conspicuous resin blisters. The leaves are needle-like and flattened. These are 2 to 3 inches long, silvery blue to silver green, extending at nearly right angles from all sides of the twig or more or less 2 ranked. Both male and female flowers (strobili) are found on the same tree. Pollination occurs in the spring and cones mature in one season. Cones are barrel-shaped, about 3 to 6 inches long, and mature in early fall. The upright cones are 2 to 5 inches long, oblong, olive green to purple. Seeds are flat and winged.
