Common names: Paraguayan Purslane
ADD

Portulaca amilis is an introduced species from South America. The native range of Portulaca amilis is widespread in South America, including parts of Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. It first arrived in the United States in North Carolina, an unusual occurrence, particularly since the first reports were inland, and not at the coast. It now thrives in Florida and several other south eastern states. It thrives in sandy fields and other dry, sandy, disturbed habitats, and other low moisture sites. This is an herbaceous, annual dicot.
Paraguayan purslane has simple, alternate leaves that are flat in cross section and wider at the tips than at the stem end. Foliage is oval to spatulate in shape and semi-succulent. The plant is rangy and spreads out but is very low growing. It blooms from spring to fall and has very attractive blooms. The flowers of Portulaca amilis are an intense, deep pink, very striking and attractive. The flowers bloom for only a single day and only for a few hours. The fruit is a small round capsule which splits at the midsection to reveal tiny, black seeds. Seeds germinate readily and this purslane can become a common lawn weed.
