Common names: Japanese Elm
ADD

Japanese elm is a relatively small tree of the family Ulmus. It is native to Japan and northeast Asia where it grows in China, Mongolia, Korea and Siberia. The tree is found growing in wetlands and along streams. It is extremely hardy and resistant to the deadly Dutch elm disease.
Ulmus davidiana can grow to 50 feet in height with a trunk 1 foot in diameter. It has a rounded, umbrella shaped crown, smooth young gray bark and fissured mature bark. The leaves are oval to elliptical, 3 to 5 inches long, 1 to 2 inches wide, hairy and doubly serrated on the leaf margins. Foliage is dark green and fades to golden yellow in fall before leaf drop. Young leaves may emerge with a red tinge. The flowers are inconspicuous, greenish red and without petals. The fruit is a winged samara, brownish with a single seed.
Japanese elm requires well drained soil and sheltered, humid conditions. It is not a very commonly cultivated tree in the West.
The tree is named for Father Armand David, the French missionary and naturalist who introduced the tree to France in the 19th century.
